Blog:Introducing Solid Foods
When will the baby food start?
The most suitable time to start weaning (introducing solid foods) is around 6 months of age. Before this age, babies exhibit a reflex action where they push anything that enters their mouth with their tongue. It’s only after 4 months of age that this reflex diminishes, and their digestive system starts to mature. By 4 to 6 months, babies can hold their heads up and may even be able to sit with assistance. Additionally, during this period, babies observe adults eating and often mimic the action by putting anything they can grab into their mouths. Hence, it’s considered an appropriate time to begin weaning.
However, there are some important considerations:
Starting Too Early: If weaning begins before 4 months, there’s a risk of immature digestive function leading to indigestion and inadequate swallowing reflex, which could result in choking.
Starting Too Late: Delaying weaning beyond 6 months can lead to nutritional deficiencies and growth issues. Surprisingly, recent studies suggest that delaying weaning might increase the occurrence of food allergies and atopic dermatitis.
Remember to tailor the timing based on your baby’s individual development and consult with a pediatrician for personalized advice.
